Can I include the number of a document in its template?

ContactsLaw does not assign a document number until after a document has been successfully built and uploaded to the document library. Additionally, some types of documents are not ultimately uploaded to the library. For these reasons, the document number cannot be included in a template.

You can, however, include the number of any existing document in a template; specifically, the 'in-reply-to' document and any enclosures/attachments.

Microsoft Word

The ContactsLaw add-in for Microsoft Word provides a feature to insert the document number into the body of the document once it has been built. This feature can be used in templates, as the field containing the document number is refreshed each time the document is opened for editing. Note, however, that if the document is never opened for editing, the field will not be updated.

Microsoft Outlook

The ContactsLaw add-in for Microsoft Outlook provides a similar feature to the above.
